White Chocolate Atlanta Dancer
Goblins and ghosts and ghouls- oh my! It’s almost Halloween again, and that means droves of neighbourhood “zombies” and fairy princesses knocking on doors for their treats. This year, make sure your trick is to pack off the kids with environmentally-friendly costumes, goodies and other green approaches to making this a Halloween to remember.
A recent poll amongst parents and folks in the know has netted a spate of fabulous ideas that anyone can employ this Halloween.
- Remember when you were a kid and you’d comb the neighbourhood for your treats using a sturdy, old pillowcase? Well, take those out again and save the environment of yet another plastic bag (North Americans use over 350 million plastic bags a year- most of which end up in landfills and take too long to break down). If your kids are too embarrassed by using an old pillow case, try a canvas shopping bag- if it’s good enough for groceries, it’s good enough for candy and other goodies!
- Make your Halloween a neighbourhood event by walking along with your kids (especially if they’re very young), chatting with your neighbours and getting to know who lives in your area. Leave the car at home and breathe in the fresh fall air!
- Mom, entrepreneur and owner of Borden Communications+Design, Lisa Borden suggests, “Buy your organic pumpkin at a farmers market, or better yet, pick your own. Growing a pumpkin takes an awful lot of pesticides and they take up lots of space in landfills and release greenhouse gases as they decompose. Make full use of your entire pumpkin by roasting the seeds (yummy and very healthy), make a soup or pie, and compost the pumpkin when you're done.”Writer’s note: Think of the tarts or pie you can make and freeze for later! The kids would also probably love pumpkin chocolate chip cookies once their candy is long gone…
- Borden also wisely suggests you either re-use an old costume you bought years ago or fashion your own without using toxic face paints- click here to read what’s in most of them! Truly scary stuff! And the rationale behind it is sound. She says, “I really cannot understand putting on an off-gassing, store-bought, made-in-china, phthalate-laced, over-packaged mask by choice!” Some of her fabulous alternatives include:
- Dressing up as a ballet dancer or hockey player.
- A Whiteboard: all white clothing with a pen on a string around your neck and people can sign you - now that is interactive!
- A Compact Florescent Lightbulb: all white clothing with skinny white balloons in twisty shapes on your head.
- A Jelly Fish: dressed in pink while opening and closing an umbrella.
- You get the idea- use your imagination people!
- Good Health Natural Foods line of fabulous kettle-batch fried chips, polenta chips, apple chips, organic popcorn and veggie chips all made without trans-fats, they’re GMO-free and taste absolutely terrific!
- Glee Gum
- Yummy Earth Lollipops
- Home Free Treats Cookies and Cake Squares that are tree-nut, dairy and gluten free while being organic and 100% tasty! Now every kid gets to have his/her cake and eat it too! And that’s the recipe to a happy, greener and more enjoyable Halloween!
